It took years, but finally they did it. Mac lovers finally got a new iMac with stylish sleek design and high resolution display. Along with the new design, the iMac now includes the proprietary Apple M1 processor. But is it a good match for a desktop PC? We have tested it.

What’s New in iMac 2021?

Following the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, Apple has now also provided the iMac with its own processor. The larger model will still run ‘old-fashioned’ on an Intel processor for the time being. The new iMac 2022 would be equipped with ‘Apple Silicon’ was no surprise. Until the announcement of Apple, it was only a question whether Apple would use a faster chip than the MacBook Air, Pro and Mac mini. That turned out not to be the case, it is exactly the same Apple M1 that was used before. The cheapest entry-level configuration of the iMac 24 inch even includes the variant that is also used in the entry-level version of the MacBook Air with 7 instead of 8 enabled GPU cores.

Stylish, Slim and Sleek design

Functionally, the differences aren’t earth-shattering, either, and the computer is still instantly recognizable as an iMac. The front contains what some call ‘a chin’ under the screen. The speakers are also incorporated in the Kin and they sound really good. It is striking that the logo has disappeared from the front. With the new iMac 2021 design, Apple returns to the roots of the iMac. Because just like the first iMac G3, the iMac Pro 2021 design is also available in 7 cheerful colors. Like the first iMac (and all other models until Apple switched to aluminum). The iMac has a white rather than black border around the screen.

Just 2 Thunderbolt Connections

As this model is a lot thinner than its predecessor. The extreme side is a bit thicker because the back of iMac 2021 is now completely flat instead of convex. This comes with an important advantage because the headphone jack has now been given a place on the side. A big improvement over the previous models where the headphone jack was on the back. Now you can access it without having to move the computer. The other ports are on the back, but there aren’t many in the case of the version I tested: this iMac has exactly two Thunderbolt ports with USB4 support. The more expensive standard configuration also has two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports.

This model only has two USB ports but you can plug your headphones into the side.

iMac Pro 2021 Configurations

The cheapest basic configuration is available in four colors while the other two basic configurations are available in seven colors. The cheapest model is equipped with an M1 with 7 instead of 8 enabled GPU cores. In addition, as previously written, two additional USB-C ports are missing on this entry-level configuration. The fingerprint scanner on the keyboard is missing and the network connection to the power supply is also absent.

You can opt for the Ethernet connection for an extra 30 dollars. And if you want the fingerprint scanner, you can do that too, then you need to pay extra. With this, the basic configuration for 1529 dollars has all the functionality that the basic configuration of 1669 dollars also offers, except for the two extra USB ports and extra GPU core. You only have less choice in terms of colors because orange, yellow and purple are not available.

Is it worth buying iMac Pro 2021?

The iMac 2021 can be ordered via the online Apple Store or any marketplace like Walmart or Amazon. If you act quickly, you will receive the new iMac in the next few days. But we won’t recommend to invest in iMac 2021 because Apple’s new iMac 2022 is expected to launch in first quarter of 2022. The newer version is coming with the 27-inch retina display and face recognition features. That’s awesome, but I need a Mac right now!
